Default 2004 ES330 XM Radio Install Success!

I was a little nervous on Wednesday after forking out $369.00 plus tax on the XM module (Lexus part #: 86100-0W100) for my Nav/ML equiped ES. After 1.5hrs of install (actually longer since I was taking pictures to post), the result is official, the XM module integrated into my system. The mfg date really didn't matter. I have lots of pictures of the install I can post later this week.

I'll be adding the rear view camera and mic this winter. I can't wait to do that!

Very interesting...so the stock amplifier has aux audio inputs? You have Lexus audio or ML? Can't wait to see the photos...

I have the ML navigation system. The XM tuner mounts next to the amp in the trunk while the tuner wiring runs to the head unit. The head unit then returns the signal back to the amp. I'll post the pics tomorrow.

Default XM Radio Install

I started the instal by removing the negative battery cable. I didn't remove the positive since I needed to move the powerseats for better access.

I then removed the center dash parts. The trim around the shifter needs to be removed with a firm tug by grasping the corner of the trim. The trim is held in place with 4 plastic clips after placing the shifter in neutral by pressing the shift override.

The ash tray was removed by giving it a firm tug- I then unplugged the cigarette power.

The Circulation controls and wiring were removed next.

The head unit was removed by unbolting the 4 10mm bolts. 2 of the bolts are hidden and required the use of a 6" extension to get the bolts.

I then removed the wiring and placed the head unit aside.

The trim piece below the glove box was removed by a firm tug towards me. I also removed the light power wire.

The passenger kick panel came off next. The kick panel is held in place by a plastic clip and a metal clip.

The glove box was removed as well. It's held in place by 2 bolts and 3 screws. You will also have to remove the 2 glove box stops and the tension spring.

The rear floor scuff panel and the pillar trim piece were carefully removed, and the weatherstrip was taped out of the way.

I then removed the rear seat bottom by placing a screw driver between both of the seat latch and the plastic latch piece.

I then removed the seat back by giving it a few upward and firm blows after removing all 4 bolts. The 3 attachment areas are circled in yellow, while the 4 bolts aren't pictured.

At this point, I was done with the interior disassembly.

The XM Tuner is mounted just forward of the amp in the trunk, so I had to disassemble the trunk trim pieces.

I started by removing the hidden storage tray on the left of the trunk. It was held in place by 1 bolt. I also removed the rear trunk trim just below the latch. It is held in place by 4 clips, 2 screws and the cargo net clips.

Lastly, I removed the right trunk trim held in place by 2 plastic clips. At this point, I was done with trim removal.

I had to remove the ML amp to install the XM tuner since it is mounted just forward of the amp. The only 2 amp bolts I removed were on the bottom while I lightly loosened the top bolt and slid it out of the hole.

I thought this was the fun part:

I ran the wiring from the trunk and worked my way ttowards the dash. I used the hole circled in blue on the previous picture.

I was careful when running the wire at the rear seat since the right rear seat bottom has a solid metal brace that the wire needs to be run under. I also taped the edges to prevent ruining the wire when pulling. The wire is then run next to the wire harness under the scuff trim and towards the front. The following picture will give you an idea of how I an it.

BTW, I ran the wire so that it's weight would not eventually ruin another wire.

I ran this end towards the front. The exisiting 12 pin wire connects to this harness and then into the back of the head unit.

After reaching the head unit, I then used the included wire ties to attach the wires to the car and existing harness. Just after running the wires, I then reassembled all of the dash parts and front trim pieces.

Before replacing all of the trim pieces, I made sure I connected all of the wires to the appropriate attachments and made sure the new wire harness did not get piched or pinch another item.

After this step, I assembled the tuner brackets. Note the following pictures for its position.
