Default p0446? where in the world is the charcoal canister

ok. tags are due by the end of this month. cel is on for p0446. ive done reading on both TN and here, was always under the impression it was in the rear. well. i went to do it today. but nothing. this is for a 97es300. our comp just crashed recently so i need to dl another FSM. but where is the canister located? and i purchased the part 90910-12264 awhile ago from toyota, but i cant seem to find where the canister is with this part. my time is limited. i work everyday since we've opened up our business. i only get one half day off, other than that 10-10 everyday. can someone show me where this part or canister is located?
thank you

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The vapor pressure sensor and VSV for vapor pressure sensor are used to detect abnormalities in the evaporative emission control system.
The ECM decides whether there is an abnormality in the evaporative emission control system based on the vapor pressure sensor signal.
DTC P0441 and P0446 are recorded by the ECM when evaporative emissions leak from the components within the dotted line in fig. 1 below, or when there is a malfunction in either the VSV for EVAP, the VSV for vapor pressure sensor, or in the vapor pressure sensor itself.

Title:
EVAP SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS: P0441/P0446

Models:
ES 300, SC 400, LS 400, LX 45

Apri1 3, 1998

Introduction

The following procedure is recommended for repair of MIL "ON" conditions involving confirmed DTC P0441 and P0446.

Affected Vehicles

^ All ES 300, SC 400, LS 400, LX 450 that display a code P0441 or P0446.

Repair Procedure

A. Diagnostics for P0441:

1. Remove Vacuum Hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister and discard.

2. If there is a metal vapor pipe between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister, clean inside of vapor pipe.

3. Replace EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister assembly with new parts.

4. Install new vacuum hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister.

B. Diagnostics for P0446:

1. Inspect vacuum hoses and pipes between EVAP (Purge) VSV and Charcoal Canister for leaks.

2. Replace Vapor Pressure VSV and Canister.

NOTE: When performing diagnostics for an occurrence of a MIL "ON" condition, the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0441 may be the result of debris in the Evaporative Emission Control System. This may cause blockage of a vapor line, or a stuck VSV, as described in the troubleshooting area of the Repair Manual.

The part you ordered is a VSV(Vacumm switching valve).

The code indicates there is a problem with the VSV, Hose from VSV to Canister, or the canister itself. Proper diagnosis while point to the part of failure.

Visually inspect charcoal canister. Look for cracks or damage.
Check for clogged filter, and stuck check valve and diaphragm.

(a) Install the plug to port E.

(b) While holding port B closed, blow air (1.76 kPa, 18 gf/sq.cm, 0.26 psi) into port A and check that air flows from p9rt D.

(c) While holding port B and port D closed, blow air (1.76 kPa, 18 gf/sq.cm, 0.26 psi) into port A and check that air does not flow from port C.

(d) Apply vacuum (3.43 kPa, 25.7 mmHg, 1.01 in.Hg) to port B, check that the vacuum does not decrease when C is closed, and check that the vacuum decreases when port C is released.

(e) While holding port C closed, apply vacuum (3.43 kPa, 25.7 mmHg, 1.01 in.Hg) to port A and check that air flows into port B.
If a problem is found, replace the charcoal canister.
(f) Remove the plug.

Reinstall charcoal canister.

btw, i wanted to update this. after much haggle with a few dealerships, i finally went to a local lex dealer, and they searched my car with the vin#. the part that i needed was 90910-12271. it is a cross referenced part, a little different that the original design, but after replacing it, and resetting CEL. no more CEL, and its been about a week now. just gotta fix my leaking fuel problem.

could a faulty charcoal canister cause gasoline to leak from the connection where the fuel line exits the fuel tank? because it is leaking, and the hose seems to look fine. somebody, anybody?

I just replace my charcoal canister in a 2000. It sits under the car right above the muffler next to the spare wheel well. Pretty straight forward, much easier if you remove the muffler. It shouldn't take more than 1.5 hrs. Note all the little hoses, I think there were like 7 or 8 hoses, don't screw those up because it will still show a CEL. Best of luck!

Have you guys tried simply changing fuel cap? It's least expensive part but if it's leaking it'll set off CEL P0446

This is some really good information. I change my gas cap and it took a while for the codes to return, but they did return.
