Has anyone used the new spray on paint protection (versus 3m clear films)? Looking for both cost comparisons and thoughts about this... the ability to cover the entire vehicle as easily as just a front bumper/hood is very attractive, but not if there's associated risks (paint discoloration, bubbling, lacquer checking, etc.).

Thoughts?

I think the spray-on stuff could be risky, because it's not easily removable. Most people go with the film because if you ever get in an accident, or if the clear bra gets damaged, you can always just peel it off and get it re-installed. With the spray-on stuff, I'm not sure how they would re-do parts of the car. Also, I'm not sure how the paint would react to the spray-on material.

The thickness of the film must be 5X or 10X thicker than the spray. Have you checked that? If so that's a no brainer. Besides, don't goop your whole car with that, Lexus worked hard to make your paint look beautiful and I am wondering how it would look after the spray.

I'd be cautious using a spray all over your car, it could ruin the paint and ultimately the look of the car. Also, a spray isn't going to have the thickness of a film unless you just pile it on there. Do you have a link to a brand you were looking at?

In addition to what everyone else is saying, I have one more word to add - DUST. Do you have a completely dust free environment to apply this stuff? Even the best paint booths in the best shops allow some dust. IMHO, this is a bad idea

Film is the way to go. It's proven and it's easily replaceable.

i agree with the film approach. my F was done yesterday with 3m ($499) and it's the third vehicle I've had done --- worth every single penny here in FL during "love bug" season... simple spray with diluted windex and the bugs just wipe right off.

The sprays are applied by body shops just like a clearcoat. i believe there are a few manufacturers but i cannot recall the name. in other words, bodyshops and paintshops are the only installers. its applied in 4-5 coats and is 2-3x thicker than factory paint and, apparently, nearly invisible.

$499! That's a good price, and I'm assuming you got coverage to include 1/3 of your hood and your fenders (I paid around $699). Anyone know the pricing on the Spray-On?

I remember driving through FL during love bug season - the front of my rental car turned from silver to black. It was nasty.

I cannot find anything on that site that mentions vehicles. It all says concrete flooring coatings (maybe I just can't find it). I'd still go with a film (3M or other) since they are proved to work. Shop around your area for a reputable shop with a good price that meets your budget
