I'm new to the Forum and do not own and never have owned a Lexus RX model or Toyota for that matter. I currently drive a Mercedes '02 CL500. It is now out of warranty and these suckers are very expensive repair wise. Further, they are not the most reliable cars on the market. I have always liked the RX model and was wondering about its reliability, specifically the third generation . I've only heard go things about Lexus (Toyota) except very recently, of course, regarding the gas pedal. Your input would be appreciated.

I have owned Toyota products for years and never had a problem with a one. This is my first Lexus and have had no problems other than a few small rattles, which I solved. I have a friend who buys only Ford and each car he has owned has been in the shop for one reason or another. He always gets rid of them at the end of warranty.

This is my 3rd Lexus. Except RX has some minor "design flaw" and I don't feel too much excitement on driving, this car is running pretty well and very comfortable to ride. So far so good.

My families have owned numerous Lexus vehicles since Lexus made their debut in the early 90 and had the ES and LS at that time. So far, we never had any "big" or "major" issues. If comparing with other brands we used to have or now we're having, our Lexus have much less issues and usually receive the better treatments and services. I guess we will continue to get cars from this brand for a long period of time. IMHO.

I was a member of the Mercedes camp for over twenty years. I pushed my parents into a Toyota product in the mid 1990's, then to their first Lexus in 2004. They are on their third RX, a 2010 RX350 AWD. From the 1990's until their present car they have never once had a issue other than normal maintenance.
I am a car enthusiast since childhood, owning special interests cars of all different kinds. Lexus is not perfect, an example would be soft paint finish, but they have made my life simpler regarding my daily driver and that of my parents. I am not a Lexus groupie like some and my car is not tied to my self esteem. My praise for Lexus comes from personal experience that reflects dependability and outstanding customer service. The German camp would have to do some hard dancing to get me back into their showroom. I save my energy for my special interests cars.
If you make the switch I wish you the same experience I have enjoyed.

In the past I have endured the high maintenance cost of owning a Mercedes 450 SEL, a BMW and a couple of other German cars. When I switched to Japanese cars my maintenance costs became nearly non existent. For the last 30 years my family and I have driven Honda, Toyota and Lexus with very limited costs for mostly routine maintenance.

My 2000 RX300 has only had routine maintenance until now. When my Air/Fuel sensor arrives I will be replacing the second of two sensors. You could probably call this semi-routine maintenance.

Keep up the routine maintenance and you can not go wrong IMO.

Look at Consumer Reports reliability for the RX and you'll see that it is much better than average

I had a Highlander for 8 years and 100+k miles before I went to the RX350. Highlander was the best car I ever had. Almost bulletproof reliability. The thing just runs. Mostly scheduled maintenance, a few repairs. Got a nice price from CarMax to buy it, even though I didn't buy theirs...
