Default My SC400 manual conversion

Hello Everyone
I wanted to make a little contribution to the forum by posting a few pictures of my SC400 manual swap. There aren’t a lot of pictures out there to help potential swapper so I hope this will help out.

It’s a relatively easy swap that can be done in only a few hours.

I have made a post a few months ago regarding using the 240sx clutch pedal assembly in the SC400. The pedal is working perfectly fine with no issues so far.

Where I live, we need to have all of our smog /Emission equipment working, therefore, I had to modify the kit in order to keep all the smog related items.
Here is a picture of the modified adapter plate that I am using. This enabled me to keep the EGR tube on my SC400

I am using the stock KA driveshaft for the swap, I didn’t see the need to get a 1 piece driveshaft made.

Shifter location , I had to cut off the stock SC400 trim to accommodate the manual shifter. I will clean up the hole with my dremel another time

It seems that a lot of people are loosing the speedometer after swapping the ka transmission in the SC400,
The KA has a 2 wire sensor and the SC has a 3 wire sensor. I got this little device here called the Ultra speed from a local importer, which enables me to get my speedometer working. Yes the speedo works but needs to be calibrated. ( My car is in KM / the device in Miles )

I have also gotten the Dakota digital but I won't be needing it apparently.

There is a quick video when I first had it working, My car is in KM, the device is in miles, that explains why the values are off.

Let me know if you require any assistance with the wiring.

I hope these pictures will be helpful to anyone converting the SC400 to manual using the KA transmission

It may be in your other thread, but why did you decide to go KA?

Also, I'm guessing this is a '92? Where in Canada are you located?

Nice thread though with great pics. I will be referring to this thread and a few others when I jump into my swap.

because KA"s are dirt cheap and easy to come by, I have friends with them just laying around. If it blows, it blows, just go hop on craigslist or ask some of your drift friends if they have one laying around.

How hard would it have been to extend the shifter? Not too keen on the trimming but I have been wanting a 5 speed 400 ever since I got my car!

Yeah I was gonna ask about that too. Seems like it's only due to the fact you're using the short shifter? Was there any trimming required because of the KA fitment?

Interesting that you did this to a '97 obd2 car. I plan on doing a W58 (or R154) into my '99 and am a bit worried about the wiring of the R154 into an obd2 car since it doesn't seem anyone has done it. I may just be asking you specifics about how you were able to figure out the KA wiring in the near future.

You don't have to trim anything, using the stock shifter C clip, everything lines up however, I was using a short shifter that required 4 allen keys screw all around the shifter assembly.

To be honest, the wiring is the easy parts, there are a total of 4 wires to hook up in order to get the car running,
The reverse sensor and the neutral switch start sensor.
I have tapped my reverse wires into the transmission, the R on the dash light up everytime I engage reverse, comes in handy when you're using a short throw shifter, the second wire is the neutral switch, I had it running through the clutch pedal sensor. That enable me to only start the vehicle with the clutch pedal depressed.
The speed sensor is a bit more complicated but I came up with 3 ways so far to bypass this little issue and get a accurate speed reading, you won't be having any speed related issues if you stick with the toyota transmissions.

I was also told that the OBD2 would throw a code if I were to convert, I have put over 500 km so far and no codes. I hope it remains that way.

There is a side note I would like to add regarding the manual conversion with a KA, I would highly recomand moddifying the 3SGTE flywheel in order for it to receive the KA or SR pressure plate, Yes the car runs fine but clutch feels heavy, I drive a lot in traffic and pedal feel is very important to me.
The main reason for the stiff pedal is the release bearing,
The release bearing pushes on the pressure plate forks but sits out too far (in my oppinion) from the center of the pressure plate, from my experience, that will prematurely cause the aluminum KA transition shaft to weaken or break because of the added stress.
I will be taking mine apart again as soon as I can score a good KA24 staged pressure plate and have my machinism make the required moddifications.

Look under the car on the original auto harness with the big plug, stick in a 10 amp fuse to connect the 2 larger connector. Your car will start no problem after.
I used to have it that way but i have now extended the wires into the clutch switch so that I can only start the car with the clutch pedal depressed for safety.

Hope this helps.

great work, did you just have the adapter plate cut so that you didnt have to modify the emissions equipment?

did you cut it or did you have the manufacturer do it? Collins adapters?

and how did you get the speedometer working?

also is that adapter better than making a custom driveshaft? and has there been any issues?

is it as easy to do this on an sc300 regardless of the tranny type meaning toyota or other. Also since we dont have a 3rd pedal how hard is it to run the pedal do you have pictures of that and what additional wires do you need. another question is if you were to go 5speed auto say from an newer gs, not sure if newer sc's ever had the 5 speed
