the ebay shocks are much more powerful than the oem, so you need to be VERY careful when opening and closing the hood.

but other than that work fine.

Did you buy these?
I thought eBay only sells one type.

Default Hood struts installed!

Folks, installed my new hood struts from eBay. $42. Piece of cake! Took 20 minutes and 5 of that was finding a piece of wood the right size to hold the hood open. Tried to make my buddy who has an RX330 feel foolish for spending over $200 at the Lexus dealer but he won;t admit that!

Thanks for steering me there

You'll find that DIY maintenance on the Lexus is as fun as it is rewarding and a great way to save money.

I just put a set on my '96 a couple weeks ago. Got them from this auction: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=PAI...1&_from=&_ipg=

They work perfectly. They are definitely (much) stronger than the worn-out ones I had on before. However, they are not too strong. As I was putting them on, I tested -- a single new shock will not hold the hood up by itself, so I'm pretty comfortable that there isn't a risk. I still put the hood down carefully, though. And watch when you open the hood, the new struts will put it up pretty quickly and make it rattle.

I just replaced mine a few minutes ago with a pair of Strong Arm hood lifts from the local Advance Auto Parts. They were incredibly easy to install, about as easy as changing your wiper blades. They went for $70 for the pair and I had them in my hands in one day. A little more expensive than the eBay ones, but I'm not complaining at all.

So far they seem to work very well. They are very strong, but I can push the hood down to close it without too much effort. My old ones were 18 years old before they failed, so I can't really say if these are stronger or weaker than the OEM ones. At $300 a pair for OEM though, I really don't care to find out if there's a difference.

This was just for 1 strut while the original unit is still on the hood.

Thank you in advance.
I sourced my hood struts from Advance Auto Parts. Strong Arm brand, right off the shelf, no special order. They're about $28 apiece + tax. They come with the replacement ball joints built in so it's a direct OEM replacement. They've worked wonderfully for a month - and the hood has needed to be opened & closed many, many, many times in the course of that month.
